Chennai to Kodaikanal Traffic Information

There are three primary routes for a Chennai to Kodaikanal road trip, each with special experiences, stops, and road conditions.

The Chennai – Villupuram – Trichy – Dindigul – Kodaikanal route is the most widely used direct route, around 520 km. The trip normally takes 9 to 10 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. It’s a smooth journey on the well-maintained NH38 highway.

You can stop at the historic Gingee Fort, which offers panoramic views, at Villupuram along the way. After that, Trichy offers the opportunity to see the well-known Srirangam Temple and Rock Fort Temple.

Before reaching Kodaikanal, Dindigul is a great place to halt and is renowned for its superb biryani. The route from Dindigul to Kodaikanal offers stunning views as it travels through verdant hills and thick forests.

The Chennai – Vellore – Salem – Palani – Kodaikanal route takes roughly 10 to 11 hours to cover the distance of 570 km. It entails taking the NH48 and NH44, which are both well-maintained and provide a relaxing journey.

A noteworthy destination is Vellore, home of the magnificent Vellore Fort and the Golden Temple. Salem, another significant city along this road, has many restaurants and rest areas.

After that, the road goes to Palani, well-known for the Palani Murugan Temple and draws pilgrims and tourists. The ascent to Kodaikanal from Palani offers a scenic trip through verdant surroundings and tranquil settings.

The journey through the route of Chennai – Villupuram – Thanjavur – Dindigul – Kodaikanal takes about 10 to 11 hours to complete and covers a distance of about 550 km. The roads are generally in decent shape, especially the NH32 and NH36.

Once more, Villupuram is a handy place to start. And much further on, Thanjavur, home of the magnificent Brihadeeswarar Temple, provides an in-depth look at Tamil Nadu’s rich cultural past. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must for those who love history.

The route then rejoins the NH83 towards Dindigul after passing via Thanjavur, providing time to visit the city’s historic fort and sample its renowned biryani before ascending to Kodaikanal. Arriving in the mild climate of Kodaikanal, the last stretch is a picturesque and revitalising drive through the Western Ghats.
