Mamallapuram, or Mahabalipuram as it is often called, is a well-known and historically significant tourist destination near Chennai. It is located on the Coromandel Coast along the Bay of Bengal in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is notable for its beautifully carved temples and rock-cut caverns. 

Mahabalipuram was formerly the residence of the illustrious demon king Mahabali and was subsequently given the name Mamallapuram.
